The EU AI Act entered into force in August 2024 with a phased rollout. Prohibited practices were banned in February 2025. General-purpose AI model obligations kicked in August 2025. The big one — the full risk-based classification system and compliance requirements for high-risk AI — takes effect in August 2026.

The Act applies to any AI system that affects EU residents, regardless of where the deployer or provider is headquartered.
